Finished Baptismal Fount
The glass infant font was cast
large enough to baptize infants. The exterior is has raised
seashells and sand texture. The smooth interior assures an
infant’s comfort and also splashes the light above. Brightly
colored glass tiles meander across the bottom of the dark glass
pool. Light, mystery, symbols and tradition are intermingled
design elements.
The existing stained glass window
wasn’t visible from the nave in the old scheme. In the new
design the baptismal theme in the stained glass window plays
across the surface of the water in the new font.
The cast glass
tiles inlaid in the slate walls support the theme of the
immersion font. This view shows the visual connection between
the font and altar in the background.
The green marble cap was apart of the old communion rail that had been in storage
for many years. These special pieces help create continuity for
long term parishioners and the new changes in their familiar
worship space.
Recirculating water
from the upper font to the lower font is a visual and audible
reminder of “death to life and life to death”. . The eight-sided
forms provide a strong sense of place and are a familiar symbol
of life on the “eight day”. The strong pattern is a visual clue
of a slight change in floor level and entrance in to a sacred
precinct.

These virtual images were created months in advance of
construction to allow our client to select options in the design
with confidence. Note the square arch above one font and the
alternate curved arch above the font in the other view. No one
was required to read conventional blueprints and everyone was
able to see the font from different views.
